במטרה להתאמן וללמוד גרמנית, התחלתי לקרוא סיפורים של האחים גרים. כדי לעשות sanity check להבנה שלי את הטקסט, אני קורא פסקה בגרמנית – פסקה בתרגום.

כשניסיתי לבדוק את התרגום של Babel Fish/Google Translate (שלפחות עבור גרמנית הפלט שלהם זהה) להתחלה של הענזעל וגרעטעל, נתקלתי במקרה המשעשע הזה (הכוונה במקור היא לרעב או מחסור; famine או dearth (שגם קשור אטימולוגית) בתרגומים האנגליים):

בגרמנית זה מופיע ככה (ההדגשה שלי, כמובן):

Vor einem großen Walde wohnte ein armer Holzhacker mit seiner Frau und seinen zwei Kindern; das Bübchen hieß Hänsel und das Mädchen Gretel. Er hatte wenig zu beißen und zu brechen, und einmal, als große Teuerung ins Land kam, konnte er das tägliche Brot nicht mehr schaffen.

ב־Babel Fish זה מתורגם ככה...:

Before a large forest a poor wood hacker with its wife and its two children lived; the Bübchen was called Hänsel and the girl Gretel. It had to bite and break few, and once, when large price increase came into the country, it could not create daily bread any longer.
